Skin and Other Stories by Roald Dahl

Most people think of Roald Dahl as the famous author of wonderful children’s books.  Several of those books have been made into rather famous movies.  Dahl also has several collections of short stories written for adults.  This morning I finally had the opportunity to finish the short stories in the collection named Skin and Other Stories.

This is a collection of eleven short stories written by Roald Dahl and published posthumously.  There is a story about a tattoo artist who lives with a famous painter (before he becomes famous) and gets him to design, paint, and tattoo art on his back.  There is a story about a woman who murders her husband – a police officer – and then goes through the investigation with her husband’s colleagues.  Another story tells of a man who creates a machine to hear sound that is at a higher frequency than human ears can hear and discovers new worlds.  There’s also a story about a mamba snake and a cow, an encounter on a train, a child’s game of only walking on one color of the carpet to avoid the dangers of the other colors, a surgeon who is rewarded with a priceless diamond only to have it stolen, a man who makes a bet on a ship in the middle of the ocean, a tale of two poachers, the troubles of a pilot injured in a war, and a story of a husband and wife and their bridge game with another couple.

I really enjoyed these stories, and I am a bit surprised that they are not more popular.  They are well-written and fun to read.  Of course, most people don’t read short stories today.  The “trendy” and popular books are often those that follow the formula that publishers know can ell.  We do not often challenge ourselves to read outside of that.  It does make me wonder how many great novels or collections of short stories or poetry have been passed over in pursuit of sales volume.

I have several other collections of short stories that are in my TBR pile.  I am very excited to read them.  I think the next book I read will be a nonfiction book though.  It is time for me to stop procrastinating and actually start writing the novel that I have been thinking about for a while now.  I bought a book on writing to help get some motivation and help me get started again.

I also ordered a set of book binding tools.  I am going to learn how to do book binding and create beautiful bound books for my collection.  I am excited to learn and to play with this!  Maybe I will make pretty leather-bound journals as well.  I always enjoy learning new tricks and crafts.

It is time to start thinking about getting ready for work.  I am halfway through my eight day stretch.  Hopefully today will be a bit calmer than the last couple of days have been.  I might try to fit in a chapter or two in my book before I head out.  Until next time, Happy Reading!
