Rarely does a book affect you so deeply that you feel like you can do nothing else for over an hour after reading it. The book that I just finished shook me to my core. I read One for the Murphys by Lynda Mullaly Hunt.
One for the Murphys tells the story of Carley. The book starts with Carley heading to a foster home for the first time. Her stepfather beat her and her mother and put them both in the hospital. They believe her mother helped the stepfather by holding her down. So, she is being placed in foster care. She arrives at the Murphy’s house and has to learn to get along with them and become a part of a new family that is not her family. She also has to go to a new school, make new friends, learn to deal with new teachers, and more. We follow Carley through her journey as a member of the Murphy household in this book.
There are a lot of ups and downs in this book. The book is an excellent portrayal of life as a foster child, and it highlights the struggles that young people can face. It is rich, sad, funny, happy, and just an emotional roller coaster. It is worth every page.
One mistake that I made – don’t read this book at work! I had to stop reading, because I was getting too emotional. It is just a powerful book, and it really gives perspective.
I am off to find a happier book to read so that I can go to sleep with happy thoughts. I am thinking something Beverly Cleary. Until next time, Happy Reading!
